A top trip: East End Uncovered
Photo: John Mackean, England
One city that has grown old gracefully is London. Sure it is sagging here and there (so would you at around 2000 years old) but it's constantly reinventing itself, so this week's top trip shows you a side to the city that you probably wouldn't expect. Intrepid's John Warland takes us to the backstreets of London on East End Uncovered...
"Most tourists arriving in London head straight for the iconic sites of Big Ben and the Millennium Eye, or the bright lights of the vibrant West End, but for those wanting to see why London is known as being on the cutting edge of art, fashion and design you have to head East to find the real action.
After meeting our local guide Padraig at 'Silicon Roundabout', where all the creative dotcom start-ups congregate, we explored a side of London rarely seen by most visitors. Strolling past converted warehouses hosting fashion houses and alongside quiet canals harking back to the industrial legacy of this area, Padraig laid out the historical context for this regenerated area..."
South East Asia skin deep
Photo: Nelly Nghiem, Vietnam
Since time immemorial people around the world have been coming up with ways to look and feel younger. Some pretty strange potions and practices have been trialled, and Intrepid's Nicki Gibson discovers some beauty techniques in South East Asia that could make your eyes water...
"Coming from the western world, we admire the beauty of the South East Asian ladies - their lovely brown skin, brown eyes and slim physiques. Yet my experience is that many South East Asian women are also envious of our pale complexions and curves.
As westerners we have a tanning culture and think of brown skin as healthy, yet in South East Asia white skin is a sign of beauty. Asian ladies touch my skin saying it is beautiful and I look at them in amazement. "You are joking? I would love to have skin your color, my white is plain and pasty!" They reply that white shows wealth. In their country if you have dark skin it shows that you work in the fields and are poor, whereas white skin is a sign that you work in the offices and therefore have money!..."

Superman in Singapore

After an exhausting flight and the excitement of exploring your new surrounds, every traveller could do with a little pick-me-up. Intrepid Express reader Mike Uyyek went in search of a culinary adventure in Singapore and ended up finding a wine that promised to make him feel like the man of steel...
"At the Imperial Herbal Restaurant, near the famed Raffles Hotel, they serve a variety of dishes you won't find at any other establishment. The restaurant has its own Chinese apothecary and herbalist on the premises, and if you tell him what medical problems you have, he can suggest menu items that will treat them. We didn't have anything specifically wrong with us, so we simply each ordered something we'd never tried before, and if it helped to balance our yang humors, so much the better..."

Bulls win fight of their life
Photo: Wendy Chan, Spain
Bulls will no longer suffer a slow, painful and terrifying death in Catalonia's bullrings.
History has been made this week with the Catalonian Parliament voting to approve an amendment of the current animal protection legislation and ban bullfighting within the region. MPs voted resoundingly in favor of a ban and it will come into effect on January 1st 2012.
This inspiring result came about because of a long and hard-fought campaign. A campaign that has been based on a simple act: people speaking out for animals, calling on politicians to turn those voices into votes...
